Corrosion control with PLUROTECH RustEx*21™
- Waterbased Rust Converter

INTRODUCTION

RustEx*21™ : A new Improved High Performanced Waterborne Rust Converter for the 21st Century. RustEx*21™ Converter uses cutting egde coatings technology in the fight against corrosion wherever it may occur and the performance of the product takes success to a new level. The development of RustEx*21™ Rust Converter has followed years of producing one of the world's most successful Rust Converter. However, with understanding of today's polymer technology, improvements to the performance of these products were possible.

All ferrous metals corrode unless protected. The process is a complex chemical action involving moisture and oxygen. This persistent, destructive and degenerative process is accelerated by associated surface contaminants such as mineral salts and acid. Only by absorbing or neutralizing surface pollutants and completely excluding moisture and oxygen from the metal surface can an adequate long term protective system can be achieved. Existing rust control processes are only partially successful because they do not cope adequately with all three basic causes of ferrous metal corrosion:the elimination of surface contaminants, the removal of free moisture and oxygen from the metal surface and the protection of the treated surface by an impenetrable membrane.

THE EVER PRESENT PROBLEM

The basic problems of corrosion have not changed since Rust Converters were first introduced over 30 years ago. All ferrous metal will corrode unless they are protected and this corrosion is a chemical reaction which involves the availability of oxygen and water. The corrosive process does not stop once the surface is oxidized but will carry on throughout the available metal. The process will be accelerated when minerals or salts are present and only by neutralizing or absorbing these surface pollutants and then forming a barrier to exclude all oxygen and moisture can the corrosion be halted.

THE SOLUTION

RustEx*21™ Rust Converter deals with the THREE basic problems:

  • The elimination of surface contaminations.
  • The removal of free moisture and oxygen from the surface.
  • The creation of an impermeable barrier against oxygen and moisture better than any product currently on the market.

RustEx*21™ Rust Converter is water-based organic copolymer latex solutions which chemically convert rusted surfaces to a black non tacky layer in around 30 minutes. This layer gives underlying surface complete protection against further corrosion and can be coated with most commercially available paints.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS:

  • It is 100% water based; non toxic (acid free); non solvent and environmentally friendly.
  • Ideal for harsh environments.
  • User friendly, even for unskilled operators.
  • Can to be applied directly to rusted metal surfaces with minimal surface preparation. No need to sand down to bare metal - just remove loose rust, flaky and non-adhering paints; wash off dirt and contaminants.

RustEx*21™ Rust Converter has been tested to the highest standards and has met or exceeded the standards set by current products on the market. The permeability factors are extreme and in the ASTM standards B 117 Salt Spray Test no rust appeared after 2000 hours(over-coated with RustEx*21™ top-coat).

RustEx*21™ Rust Converter provides cost-effective corrosion control due to its unique protection qualities, thereby greatly reducing the need for routine maintenance work on main deck areas, cargo holds internal tanks, pipings and mooring equipment.

RustEx*21™ Rust Converter is highly recommended on Salt Water Ballast Tanks, Void spaces and many more.

Non-Toxic Waterbased RustConverter

For rust elimination and long-term protection

RustEx*21™ is a unique patented white organic copolymer latex with a specific gravity of 1.32@20°c. It dries on rusted surfaces and chemically converts these to a black non-tacky in 30 minutes under normal conditions, forming an independent complex iron/iron-oxide/organic chemical compound which gives complete protection to the treated surface. The continuous chemical curing of RustEx*21™ forms a chemical bond with every metal interface, passifying, neutralizing and chemically converting rust. The black chemical compound layer is completely RustEx*21™ and can be used as a primer, without further treatment, for standard or synthetic resin lacquers, oil-based paints, two-component lacquers or bitumastic and oil tar-based finish including micaceous iron-oxide paints. RustEx*21™ is non-toxic and does not contain phosphoric acid, lead, tannin or solvents.

Method of use

Depending on its condition, the surface to be treated will have to be degreased and loose particles will have to be removed by hand or by using a power tool. The white milky non-toxic RustEx*21™ emulsion is then applied by brush or spray. Complete inhibition and protection is achieved immediately. The black protective compound formed on the rusted surfaces does not require washing or passifying. RustEx*21™ is also an effective paint primer. Two or more coats of RustEx*21™ are used according to the rust density. RustEx*21™ can be left in its black finish, or can be over-painted.

Theory behind RustEx*21™

Newly formed rust is chemically ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) or iron which has reacted with oxygen (air) and moisture. Iron can combine with oxygen to form a variety of oxides depending on conditions of exposure. One of these oxides is magnetile (Fe304) or fersoferric oxide, a stable compound which does not readily change as exposure conditions change. This stability is the basis for the protection. RustEx*21™ reduces ferric hydroxide to ferrous oxide, then combines with the ferrous oxide to form an organic fersoferric complex which, similar to magnetile, is passivated. When incorporated into a coatings system the chemical action of RustEx*21™ is maintained.
